PROJECT

Lamp Design.

Purpose is to “Design and prototype a lamp for a friend or family member”. My focus was to design a lamp ( a source of light ) to the liking of my chosen client being my Mother. With this design brief taking place over a period of three weeks. Conflicts I came across during this design process was the lack of equipment and material, so creating anything with a curve would be utmost difficult, also creating the final design specification was a conflict. In the end I was able to create a lamp design to the liking of mum and with the use of the double diamond design process of exploring, defining, developing and delivering. I was able to create an bedside lamp, created by the material of wood and energy efficient with LED strips, the most efficient lighting, also including a book holder which my client wanted.

EXPLORING

My Information and research upon lamps.

Upon this exploring phase, i've mainly explored safari research, interviews, user shadowing.
Helping me understand and giving me an idea of lamp designs, light bulbs including light source shapes and how efficient certain lamp sources are. What form of light certain bulbs produce, for example: LED lights produce more warm colour light, as-well as halogen. Just overall understanding lamps and what the basic usages are for them.

DEFINING

Analyse all of the research findings

During this defining stage, understanding the problems my client is facing, so approaching the empathy map, however not just the conflicts my client faces but also myself in producing the design, so with the 'argument map' i looked at what conflicts her and me, for me personally was more not having access to tools and materials overall being restricted. I also looked at different ways to position a lamp within the area the client showed me. and also looked at ways to interact with the light, which would be easiest or hardest.

DEVELOPING

Process of designing, prototyping, and evaluating

During the developing, I just created designs towards nature as inspiration and just looked at shapes and ways i could cut the shape. Also looking at ways i could add additional design within my original lamp design. Evaluation is my client overlooking my designs and giving her thoughts on additional designs and what designs intrigue her the most. Prototyping with paper as-well with proper materials. And mistakes as when trying to create a bend with wood (laminate bending)  i had current access to and it snapped multiple times.

DELIVERING

Creating more design ideas for the chosen designs.

During the deliver. I initially started with developing and designing more ideas for the design ideas the client chose to improve on. Did prototypes for all then the client decided to improve one singular design. I started to draw dimensions and learning from my mistakes from before with laminate bending wood, i had to come up with an alternative and preached the idea with the client to make it more sqaure instead of curved and she agreed as it would suit the whole shape of the bedside table and room as it is block (square) themed .

MATERIAL AND DESIGN

Nail the stabiliser to the platform wood and to the wood for the lamp. Also PVA glue to make extra sure. Wood fill or PVA glue where the cut have been made to make the wood bend over.
Then dimensions for laser cutting.

CONCLUSION

Strength and Feedback/Improvement

In conclusion my bedside lamp was a design i was happy with, the idea was original and building it with minimal tools and material was exciting. However improving it i would do wood laminating to curve for the lamp itself and stabilisers and paint it with more darker brown paint, which i didn't have access to. Overall my client was impressed with the idea.
